Marines represent the bread and butter of the navy ground forces. A catchall for any soldier willing to kit up, grab a gun and ship out into space, marines are trained with most rudimentary weapon skills, basic repair, camping and squad fighting. Training for marines varies widely between systems, corporations and planets.
The hard as nails thing though, that’s ubiquitous.
Marines have been around almost as long as naval warfare. The action of boarding another’s ship dates to Ancient times. Grecian and Roman marines existed for boarding action between trimenes, hoplites were known to leap from one vessel to another to capture it intact.
Marines were first designated by Charles V in 1537 as an official navy corps.
Since then, the image of the traditional ‘Marine’ has progressed through history unabated. Marines have known action in almost every major war, and the rush to space was no different. Space was just another sea of stars and the ships on them demand both defense and agressors in the form of well trained men and women attacking both other vessels, installations and colonies.
